This week Steve tells a story about using manual focus with live view when it was too dark for his autofocus to work. It was hell. Dustin talks about video lights and we wonder if he's even a photographer anymore. We talk about some Canon, Sony, and Fuji Fast Glass stuff. Also, "They Took Our Jobs!" That's right! We have an in depth and intelligent discussion of the new Skylum software coming out, Luminar AI, that isn't just Steve trying to get Dustin to repeat a line from South Park while Dustin clearly has no idea what Steve is talking about. It's very intelligent. Also, Steve explains Dorian Grey to Dustin, kind of...
Ep. #165 - What is an Associate Photographer?
What is an associate photographer? Is it okay to put out random requests for an associate photographer on Facebook? What should you do to train an associate photographer? We talk about associate photographers for quite some time... and also about new scams and hoaxes on the internet. Hey, here's a crazy idea. Also, don't vote for Trump. He's literally the reason why weddings can't happen right now and why you can't work. Sorry to get political, but the community of wedding photographers is hurting because of the pandemic and as our nation's leader he's basically done nothing to help.
Ep. #164 - Pandemic Wedding Photos Being Used as Evidence
This week we're talking about the possibility of your photos being used as evidence in a court of law. That's right, if you take photos of people not social distancing or not wearing masks during the coronavirus pandemic, there's a possibility you could be served a warrant and forced to turn over your photos. Which we're all for. We're also talking about how Nikon should leave the camera industry, Kodak's insider trading scandal, Instagram spam, and photographers losing clients because they support Black Lives Matter. We also take a trip to the drone zone and Dustin shares a story of a recent crash and we talk about the impact of drones on wildlife.
Ep. #163 - Riding on the Edge of a Snap with Ulices Del Toro
This week's episode is a little weird. First off, it's explicit. Don't listen to it at work or in front of your kids. Second off, we didn't have time to record this week, so instead of leaving everyone hanging we're putting up some segments from some of our Patreon episodes to give people an idea of what the Patreon content is like. So, if you're already on the Patreon, sorry.
Ep. #162 - Overheating Issues with Ulices Del Toro of the Wedding Photo Podcast
This week Dustin and Steve have their friend Ulices Del Toro back on the podcast to form the Blue Shirt Boys group and also to talk about some gear that Sony put out. Like that amazing CF Express type A card and corresponding card reader. Or those new touch screen menus that Sony made. Or those hybrid card slots they created... and yes, I guess we get around to talking about the new Sony a7S III. We solve the overheating issues that both the Sony a7S III and the Canon EOS R5 are experiencing while shooting outside, with one cool product Sony put out that isn't even camera related. We also talk about the photographer that tracked down a couple getting married on the Brooklyn Bridge (to chorus) to give them a photo. We discuss whether or not you should be allowed to skip out on a wedding if people aren't wearing masks or social distancing. We also discuss Kodak's pivot to pharmaceuticals and GoPro's pivot to being a lifestyle brand. Then we talk about the improved eye autofocus on the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 and there's a Nikon z5 coming out which will have dual card slots.
Ep. #161 - Unsplash and Drone Photos with Josh Withers of the Rebel's Guide to Getting Married
This week Steve is joined by Josh Withers of the Rebel's Guide to Getting Married. Steve and Josh talk about COVID-19 cancellations, unsplash, and drone photos. They also talk about facial manipulation in photos that people do to get those big beautiful anime eyes, just like Josh's eyes in the episode art (which is definitely not a horrifically photoshopped image that Steve made with a photo of Josh's from Unsplash). Steve and Josh also talk about laminar, anthropics, and AI editors. Josh also shares about how to get great audio when you're shooting video (which is always a struggle... I mean, listen to the disclaimer at the beginning of the episode). There's also an adorable guest at the end of the show, but you'll have to watch the video if you want to be blown away by how cute Luna Withers is.
Ep. #160 - Stranger Sessions During a Pandemic and Anti-Masker Weddings
Grab your mask, Ray Bans, and fishing hat. It's time to go full Bernie. This week we've got updates on the Copper Stallion Media story and also on the Shoot and Share controversy. We're talking Godox flashes and their iPhone app and then we're talking a lot about stranger sessions, which are super controversial right now because of the pandemic. Steve goes full grumpy old man. We're also talking about the Canon Eos R5 overheating issues (are there any?) and about the new Blackmagic 12k video camera.
Ep. #159 - Which Mask Should You Wear While Shooting?
Ep. #158 - How Can You Stay Safe at a Wedding During the COVID-19 Pandemic?
Ep. #157 - Can You Turn Away Unattractive Clients? with James Kelly of the Photographers Craic Podcast
Steve talks with James Kelly of the Photographers Craic Podcast. Steve and James talk about the way COVID-19 has affected their very different countries and how they’re both coping. They also talk about James’s equine photography and a little bit about landscape. They also discuss price fixing, cartels and oligopolies.
Ep. #156 - Can you Shoot a Wedding with an iPhone? with Jennifer Van Elk
This is kind of a weird episode in that it's more serious than usual. You know how sometimes when you're a douchebag every conversation becomes a podcast (sorry, replace douchebag with podcaster). Well, that's what I did to Jenn. We were just talking through what the experience of shooting with an iPhone was like and I recorded the conversation to help me as I went to write a blog post about it later... and that turned into this episode.
Ep. #155 - Technology Troubles with Ulices Del Toro of the Wedding Photo Podcast
This week Steve forgets about Dustin. Literally, Steve forgot that Dustin was going to be out of town and had to rope Ulices Del Toro in for an emergency guest host spot... And it goes terribly. Mired in the muck of technology trouble Steve and Ulices barely manage to record an episode. It's all Steve's fault as his computer and Skype seem to just be failing him left and right. In this episode Steve and Ulices talk about a photographer who was shot in the face, an image that bricked a bunch of Android phones, Ulices's time working for Kim Kardashian's publicity team, and some other technology that Steve is breaking, specifically his Apple Watch. Also, Steve and Jenn are switching to PicTime and we start discussing that.
Ep. #154 - Wedding Crashers with Morgan Roberts and Dominic Fitzgerald of Down Down Critics are Down
This episode we discuss the highly problematic film Wedding Crashers with Morgan Roberts and Dominic Fitzgerald of the Down Down Critics are Down podcast! Buckle up, because this episode is a little bit messy. Also one of the crew this week admits something ridiculously miraculous... they've never been to a wedding. A wedding virgin watched Wedding Crashers... it's so weird.
Ep. #153 - How To Destroy a Business in Less than 48 Hours (or What Happened to Shoot and Share?)
First up, and most importantly, we're donating all the money the podcast makes this month to Black Lives Matter. We both support BLM and we think you should too. Now, on to our normal show notes... We have a lot of follow up about the Copper Stallion Media story. We didn't do a great job in our discussion of that last episode. Then we're talking about a lady who lost business due to supporting BLM and how she handled it (which was commendable). Central Camera in Chicago burns down and the owner says he's not made about it. He's just mad about what happened to George Floyd. Then we talk about Shiftcam, BS with Dan Mace, drone deliveries, a 96 mph Mavic 2 Pro, and the Wedding Photographers who claim they need 1k subs to livestream a wedding.
Ep. #152 - Drone Hunt and the Disgusting Way Copper Stallion Media Treated a Former Client
Dustin and his cool dad friend, Steve, talk about DC accents, their first shoots with people since the pandemic ended, a wedding photographer arrested for shooting during the pandemic, falling mirrorless camera sales, grandmothers ordered to remove photos of their children from Facebook, a man arrested for posting to Instagram (because he violated quarantine), and the crazy Copper Stallion Media saga and their drama with a former client, Justin Montney. Also lots of Drone Zone talk this week. Steve pitches a Duck Hunt parody called Drone Hunt, DJI might have to stop selling drones in the USA, Dustin pitches starting a blackmarket DJI drone reselling company, Art Streiber shoots Catherine O'Hara with a drone, a man shoots down a drone and is arrested, and a village head uses a drone to distribute masks to people.
Ep. #151 - Getting Back to Work After the Pandemic with Jenn Van Elk
This week we're talking about getting back to work shooting photos after the pandemic. A lot of the way we do business is going to change as a direct result of the coronavirus and we want to help guide listeners through that. But also, what's the sexiest underwear a man could wear? Because that has merit for photographers too? Right? No?
Ep. #150 - That Spicy Seed Life and a Framed Swastika on a Wedding Day
What are your feelings about breakfast in bed? Do you brush your teeth first? Also, follow up about the 180 degree rule for video/film, new ARM MacBooks Pro, a wedding photographer that may have discovered a stone henge-like structure, and a weird rant about copped cameras and photoshop. We also talk about keeping that seed life spicy in the off season... when there's plenty of time for seed but when your spouse ain't making that money you just don't feel those feels like you used to. We also talk about the PPP loans and unemployment assistance in America.
Ep. #149 - Should Photographers Wear Masks at Weddings? Plus Nana's Dank Pee Play Memes and the Mavic Air 2
Dealing with email spam from friends, turning your Canon camera into a webcam, sad coronavirus stories, and tearing down some abysmal facebook ads. We're also talking about drones being used to enforce social distancing, a hummingbird drone used to capture footage of monarch butterflies, and the Mavic Air 2. Also, Scotland might be closed for business till 2021.
Ep. #148 - Wedding Industry Pet Peeves with Natalie Franke of The Rising Tide Society and HoneyBook
This week we talk with Natalie Franke of Rising Tide and Honeybook about community building and how Honeybook is helping photographers cope with the coronavirus pandemic. We also talk about Amaretto Sours and how Natalie likes fixing her eggs. Plus we delve into some talk about workshops and wedding industry pet peeves.
Ep. #147 - How Are You Staying Creative in Quarantine?
Can you sue someone for embedding your instagram posts? We're talking about Stephanie Sinclair and her lawsuit against Mashable which predictably went nowhere. We're also talking about how to stay creative during quarantine and who owns the copyright on those FaceTime photo sessions. Also, how can we make masks sexy so we can guarantee sexy photoshoots going forward?
